In May we return to the Savoy with another slice of classic Sci-Fi Anime, from the creators of Astro Boy, Galaxy Express 999 and AKIRA !
OSAMU TEZUKA'S METROPOLIS
In the near future humans and robots co-exist and life, for the privileged elite, is paradise.
In the city of Metropolis celebrations are underway as the wealthy entrepreneur Duke Red prepares to unveil The Ziggurat, a grand military/scientific high-rise complex. But far away from the festivities in the run-down slums of the lower zones an underground resistance movement has been growing, fuelled by worker discontent and anti-robot sentiment.
After travelling to the city to arrest the rogue scientist Dr. Laughton, detective Shunsaku Ban and his nephew Kenichi meet a mysterious robot girl named Tima, who they learn was created to play a crucial role in the operation of Red’s hi-tech skyscraper. As their investigation continues Shunsaku and Kenichi discover The Ziggurat’s horrifying real purpose. They embark on a desperate race against time to thwart the Duke’s evil plans while Tima confronts the truth of her identity.
Directed by Rintaro (Galaxy Express 999) and written by Katsuhiro Otomo (AKIRA), Metropolis is based on a comic by "the Godfather of Manga", Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astro Boy) and it takes inspiration from Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent film of the same name.
The film’s gorgeous retro-futurist Art Deco look is created through a blend of traditional hand-drawn animation and computer graphics by Madhouse studio (Ninja Scroll, Paprika, Goodbye, Don Glees!), and the action is perfectly matched to a vibrant New Orleans-style jazz and orchestral score from composer Toshiyuki Honda.
Metropolis is a timeless story about the nature of humanity, beautifully brought to life by a team of world-class talent.
In Japanese with English subtitles.
As with all Porlock Press screenings, there will be no trailers running before the film, and it will begin after a brief introduction.
