How To Prepare for Extreme Weather Events w/ Joe Delli Carpini

The past year has seen a number of extreme weather events across the country, including devastating flash flooding, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Even though these extreme events are fairly rare in the Boston area, recent temperature and precipitation trends show the chances of experiencing an extreme weather event is increasing for our region. This presentation will show you how to prepare for these types of events and where to find helpful online resources; and we will review some recent storms as examples of what we need to prepare for. We will also take a look at some of the global weather patterns that may affect the upcoming fall and winter in Norwood to provide more insight into the official NOAA outlook for the next several months.

About the presenter: Joe Delli Carpini is a meteorologist, and is the Science and Operations Officer at the National Weather Service's Boston office in Norton, Massachusetts. He has over 30 years of forecasting experience. Joe’s main role is to oversee the office's science program, which includes research and staff training. He also provides training for the staff of four meteorologists at the Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center in Nashua, NH, who provide direct support to the FAA. Joe’s interests include aviation and coastal meteorology. He is involved with several national teams related to aviation, tropical, winter weather, and coastal inundation forecasting. Joe led the implementation of the office’s Decision Support Services program, which provides information to emergency managers and other core partners and established strong working relationships with federal, state, and local partners, including the broadcast media. He has been a Norwood resident with his wife Kelly and two children since 1996.
