Families and people of all ages are welcome to join the Cannon River Valley Chapter of Master Naturalists and Southeast MN Prairie Partner Chapter of Wild Ones for a family friendly event at the Carleton College Cowling Arboretum on Friday, August 1 from 8:15-9:45 PM.
We hope to see the last fireflies of the season and other night creatures and listen for insects, frogs and owls as we walk along paved and grass trails. While we are out for a walk, we will have a black light set up to attract moths and we'll try to identify what shows up with the help of entomologist, Robert Dana.
Park in the neighborhood next to Carleton near the Arboretum entrance at the intersection of Second and Oak Streets, Northfield. Walk down the paved trail and meet at the bridge over Spring Creek, near the Carleton tennis courts. Wear clothes for the weather, comfortable walking shoes, and consider wearing long pants and sleeves and bringing bug repellent for your comfort. We will use our night vision so flashlights are discouraged.
Following the event, people can choose to go to the Goodsell Observatory "First Friday" night sky program to view stars and planets through the telescope which begins at 10 PM on clear nights. Check the Observatory website for observing times and the latest weather plans.
We will offer carpooling from the Emmaus Church of Northfield to reduce parking needs around the parking needs in the construction area around Carleton.
