Every fall, Florida welcomes thousands of birds from all over as they make their way south for the winter. While many of these birds stop for a bite to eat along the way, some are in trouble, including hawks.
The Raptor Population Index Project, which has been studying migration for the past ten years from Panama to Canada, recently shared some important news. While species such as bald eagles and vultures are improving, others like sharp-shinned hawks and northern harriers are declining. Hawks are large, daytime hunters that help keep nature balanced, so these changes are concerning.
That’s where the HawkWatch program plays a vital role. HawkWatch is a citizen-science initiative where volunteers count migrating raptors at key locations, providing invaluable data to track population trends and guide conservation efforts.
But here’s some good news for you! If you’re interested in raptors and want to learn more about hawks, there’s a fantastic opportunity waiting: Join us at the beautiful John D. MacArthur Beach State Park on Friday, September 27th at 9:00 AM for “HawkWatch with David Simpson.”
Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just starting out, this event is for everyone of all ages. You’ll hopefully see hawks soaring above, learn to recognize their mesmerizing flights, and gain a deeper appreciation for these magnificent creatures. Best of all, you’ll have the chance to actively participate in the HawkWatch count and contribute directly to the data that helps scientists monitor raptor populations.
Bring your binoculars! We’ll also have spotting scopes and a limited number of spare binoculars available.
