Egg Basket
Description: learn to weave an Egg Basket using a variety of flat reed, flat oval reed, round reed, seagrass, yarn and round hoops. Egg Baskets were once used to carry eggs to the market and are still great for foraging, gathering herbs, eggs, etc., the uses are endless.
This melon shaped Egg Basket begins by weaving a four-point lashing or God’s Eye to secure the two 8” round oak hoops. Once you add Ribs, you will weave with various reed types, seagrass and yarns. After adding secondary ribs, you will continue to weave with the various fibers to complete your basket.
Basket dimensions: finished basket size with hoop is 8” wide, 5” tall (8” with hoop) and 10-11” length.
Costs: $75 including instruction and material fee. Material fee includes all reed (natural and dyed), seagrass and variety of yarn colors (some hand-dyed/hand spun), 2-8” round hoops, basket pattern and use of instructor tools/supplies.
Skill level: basic basket weaving experience helpful, but not necessary. You will be working with sharp scissors, students aged 14+ are best. Good hand strength is needed as you will be pulling and holding with a tight grip throughout the basket weaving process. You are using water throughout the weaving process, so wear something comfortable that you will not mind getting a little damp.
