Do you remember how to play pretend? Space cowboys, time-traveling knights, monster family, fairy warriors, cats with chainmail, dogs with suits and jobs, all of those lives we lived while young and untethered.
When you play banker for Monopoly, are you a cold and cruel money-lender? Do you pass money under the table while no one’s watching? Or are you a generous heart who lets it slide when the bill is late?
The core elements may be something you’re already familiar with! The rest comes from the Dungeon Master, who guides the story and the characters you meet on the journey.
Purchasing books and material is not required to participate, however all are welcoming to bring what they have for their own use. Polyhedral dice and printouts (worksheets, rules, tools, etc) will be provided for you at the library’s expense. We’ll be using a simplified version of 5th & 6th Edition DnD by Wizards of the Coast, making it easy for newbies to join and returning players interested in playing the basics.
The first four meetings are an introduction to DnD & RPGs, development of personal play style, character development, practice runs. One session a week for 4 weeks, June 10, June 17, June 24 and July 1. Get to know the game, the Dungeon Master (DM) or the Game Master (GM), the kind of character you want to play, watch/join practice runs to feel out the pacing, try out different levels of character roleplay. Workstation style sessions that break down all the components at your own pace. Practice runs will be like episodes in a TV show, folks can hop in at any time or sit back to watch.
The second round of meetings is for playing the introductory campaign from Dungeons and Dragons 6th Edition. 1 session every other week for 4 weeks, July 8, July 22, August 12 and August 26. This is a structured game with a connected storyline and mission, intended to be played over multiple days. If the practice runs were TV shows, then this is the made-for-TV movie.
