The Influence of Short-Term Ambient Environmental Exposures on Suicide Risk:

The etiology of suicide is complex with a combination of distal, mediating, and proximal factors all playing a role. The period just preceding death offers a critical window for intervention, yet evidence-based interventions are lacking. An improved understanding of the factors that contribute to suicide risk in the short-term is essential for developing effective prevention strategies. Numerous short-term exposures in the ambient environment have been individually linked to suicide such as air pollutants (e.g. fine particulate matter) and meteorological variables (e.g. temperature). Yet, individuals experience the ambient environment as a mix of stressors and not as single exposures. The interactions between air pollution and weather-related stressors on suicide risk, however, remain poorly understood. Here, I will summarize findings from several studies on the individual, interacting, and synergistic effects of multiple short-term ambient environmental exposures on the risk of suicide in Utah, USA and discuss what insight these findings shed on potential mechanisms underlying suicide and implications for prevention.
