Character Breakdown:
King Lear Suggested Age/Type: Male, 50s-80s An aging monarch who decides to divide his kingdom among his daughters based on their declarations of love. Proud, impulsive, and initially blind to truth, his descent into madness forms the heart of the play.
Goneril Suggested Age/Type: Female, 30s-50s Lear's eldest daughter. Intelligent, ambitious, and ruthless. She flatters Lear to gain power, then betrays him. Later enters a toxic rivalry with her sister Regan for Edmund's affection.
Regan Suggested Age/Type: Female, 30s-50s Lear's middle daughter. Just as cunning and cruel as Goneril, but with a colder, more sadistic streak. Shares her sister's hunger for power and lack of empathy.
Cordelia Suggested Age/Type: Female, 20s-30s Lear's youngest daughter. Honest, loyal, and principled. Refuses to flatter Lear with false praise, leading to her disinheritance. Ultimately represents truth and redemption.
The Fool Suggested Age/Type: Male or Female, 20s-60s Lear's court jester and truth-teller. Uses wit, riddles, and irony to reveal painful truths to Lear. Deeply loyal. Often seen as the voice of reason in the play's chaos. Can be played with physical or verbal comedy.
Earl of Gloucester Suggested Age/Type: Male, 50s-70s A nobleman loyal to King Lear. Like Lear, he misjudges his children, trusting the wrong son. His arc mirrors Lear's, descending into suffering and gaining wisdom through loss.
Edgar Suggested Age/Type: Male, 20s-40s Gloucester's legitimate son. Honest and noble. Forced into hiding by his brother's treachery, he disguises himself as "Poor Tom," a mad beggar. A physical and emotional transformation role.
Edmund Suggested Age/Type: Male, 20s-40s Gloucester's illegitimate son. Charismatic, clever, and manipulative. Resents his status and schemes to gain power. A classic Shakespearean villain with moments of charm and moral complexity.
Earl of Kent Suggested Age/Type: Male, 40s-70s A loyal nobleman to Lear. Banished for defending Cordelia, he returns in disguise as "Caius" to continue serving Lear. Courageous, blunt, and deeply loyal.
