Join us for a talk by Twigs Way on Sex , Setting and Symbolism: Exploring the Garden in Literature at the beautiful Italian Garden at Great Ambrook !

Gardens and plants appear in numerous works of fiction from Renaissance romance to Edwardian murder mysteries, via gothic novels and Shakespearian tragedy. With the aid of readings from writers including Chaucer, Charles Dickens , Charlotte Yonge, Daphne du Maurier and of course Jane Austen, we will explore the way in which character, plot , mood and landscape become inextricably entwined and why you should never go into the Grotto after dark!
Twigs Way is a garden historian, writer and researcher. Twigs is fascinated by the past and intrigued by the role of flowers, gardens and landscape in art and culture of all kinds. Her talks and books reflect that endless curiosity with themes of symbolism and meaning, class and gender, art and literature. Her early work was on women in garden history and she has continued to follow that interest. Twigs is an accredited Arts Society lecturer and co-director of the MA in Garden History at Buckingham University. Her history of the Chrysanthemum in art and culture was published by Reaktion in 2020.
