2024 was another year of “unprecedented” weather and January 2025 has already been the hottest on record. But we said the same in 2022, when the UK exceeded 40C, and in 2023, when almost every month was hotter than average, making it the second warmest year on record for the UK.
That same year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated that: “Human-caused climate change is already affecting many weather and climate extremes in every region across the globe.” The research that informed this conclusion is the remit of scientists who specialise in “detection and attribution”; Regan will describe some of their methods in this talk, showing how such scientists study what is changing around us, and try to pinpoint whether humans are at the root…
Regan originally studied physics in Bristol, before working in finance for a few years. Missing science, they started a PhD in Exeter in 2021, investigating “far-flung” influences on weather and climate extremes. Regan is also passionate about inclusive and accessible science, supporting various outreach organisations, including Exeter Science Centre, as an “on-hand scientist” around the South West, and the Royal Meteorological Society, as co-Editor-in-Chief of their journal Weather.
