Why This Matters:
The Star has always been a centre for counter culture in Australia. With its long, infamous history, including events such as the Star Hotel riot of 1979, which inspired the Cold Chisel song 'The Star Hotel'. The venue is also collectively remembered as a LGBTQIA+ meeting place over multiple decades, and was home to some of Newcastle's first public drag performances.
From its origins as a single-storey timber building built in 1855 to today's Bernie's Bar, this building has been a cornerstone of Newcastle's social and cultural life for nearly 170 years. In 1925 a new two-storey brick hotel was built spanning from Hunter Street to King Street, creating the iconic structure we know today.
Your voice matters! This is your chance to contribute to preserving an important piece of Newcastle's - and Australia's - LGBTQIA+ history.
