This October, Benedict Hawkin is returning to his former haunt to perform an afternoon concert of progressive folk.
Benedict Hawkin is a Northumbrian singer, songwriter, and guitarist. A rural childhood steeped in traditional music and a youth spent in Newcastle’s DIY, experimental, and art rock scene informs songs that are firmly rooted in the folk-singer idiom but are just as often angular and dissonant as they are beautiful or harmonious.
His idiosyncratic and distinctive yet skilled guitar technique draws from folk, blues, and country, yet still carries the provocative streak that gained him notoriety as an electric guitarist. Lyrically, he explores the interaction of rural and urban, the North/South divide, class conflict, and the search for meaning and purpose while feeling constrained by circumstance and identity.
