About the event

First Annual Whitefield Speaker’s Event
Dr. Jamie L. Brumett, Ph.D, professor and author of her recently published book Protestant Relics in Early America will explore what Old South Presbyterian Church became a pilgrimage site, where thousands of Protestants of all denominations came to see, touch, and sometimes, steal the body parts of George Whitefield, a famous minister buried in the church’s crypt. From his death in October 1770 onward, many Protestants argued that Whitefield’s corpse had been physically marked by the Holy Spirit on his soul’s flight heaven. Hoping to see, touch, and feel the Holy Spirit themselves, they journeyed to Whitefield’s tomb at Old South. From Newburyport to England, Whitefield’s relics became entangled in the American Revolution, debates about material manifestations of the supernatural, and the work of God in a new era of revivals.
