To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Alachua County Forever Program, the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department and Alachua Audubon Society invite residents to participate in a guided burrowing owl field trip.
The trip will take place on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Watermelon Pond Preserve (10700 SW 250th St., Newberry). Participants should park on the shoulder of the road near the boat ramp.
Participants may possibly see the only known burrowing owl population in Alachua County and learn about the Alachua County Forever Program’s conservation efforts.
A guided half-mile hike will lead to the viewing area. The terrain is hilly with very little shade, so visitors should bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and drinking water. There are no restrooms on site. The family-friendly walk is limited to 50 people.

“This year marks the 25th anniversary of the creation of Alachua County Forever, the county’s land conservation program,” said Alachua County Land Conservation Program Manager Andi Christman. “We’re excited to be offering a series of field trips and events this fall in preparation for our anniversary celebration in December.”
