Tour & Talk: More than Pipes: Reflections from the Squier & Davis Collection at the British Museum

Join us for a free, one-of-a-kind Tour and Talk at the Octagon Earthworks, part of the Newark Earthworks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ohio History Connection’s Senior Archaeologist, Dr. Brad Lepper, will lead a guided tour of this extraordinary site, followed by a conversation with Dr. Laura R. Murphy, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Washburn University.

In March 2025, Dr. Murphy spent two weeks at the British Museum’s collections facility in London, England, where more than 2,000 artifacts from the Squier and Davis collection are housed. During her time there, she examined a wide range of Hopewell cultural materials—including many beyond the well-known effigy pipes from Mound 8 at Mound City (NPS), which are currently on display.

Her talk will explore the history of the Squier and Davis collection, highlight findings from her recent collections and archival research, and offer reflections on future collaborations with the British Museum—especially in the context of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks' designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
