‘Live at London Road’ keeps its promise as Newark’s new music venture with a Winter Wilson concert this August.
The recently formed volunteer organisation behind the ‘Live at London Road’ have announced that talented folk duo Winter Wilson will play on August 30. The event will start at 7.30pm at Newark Congregational Church Hall.
Last March the first live music concert under the label ‘Live at London Road’ was launched with the singer/song writing duo of PlumHall. At the launch it was announced that the new “Live at London Road” committee would strive to bring national talent to Newark as well as providing local talent with a well-equipped new venue.
The venue has already hosted several successful live music events, but the committee is set to develop the venue as a much-needed performance space that can host not only professional musicians but also drama groups and young, aspiring local musicians keen to perform in public.
Events co-ordinator Rich Gascoyne said: “We are delighted to welcome once again this supremely talented duo to Newark to continue our journey of Live at London Road concerts.
“Husband and wife duo Kip Winter and Dave Wilson have performed their infectious songs in Germany, Australia, Spain, Canada, Belgium and New Zealand, and now we are bringing them to Newark.
“They have released a string of critically acclaimed albums, including a live album, recorded on tour and at Fairport Convention’s annual Cropredy Festival, so I am sure they will prove hugely popular.”
Tickets for the concert are available now and organisers expect a capacity audience – “so it’s first come, first served,” said Richard. “Tickets are £12.50 each including refreshments during the interval, but anyone preferring something stronger can bring their own alcohol.”
Since the committee was formed, money has been raised through loans and financial support from the church to invest in lighting and sound systems, to create a more professional performing space:
“Although we have had great support from the church, this is a separate organisation created to oversee the running of this exciting development. The hall at Newark Congregational Church is an ideal location for promoting small musical or drama events,” Richard added.
“This is something that up to now has been sadly lacking in Newark. Newark Palace can accommodate an audience of 600-plus and there are local pubs that put on live music, but there is a real need for a designated space for live music and drama, catering for between 60 and 80 people, and we aim to fill that gap.”
All the committee members are volunteers and while the concerts are intended to be self-supporting, the aim is to promote live music and drama locally rather than to make a profit.
Added Richard: “We are all enthusiasts for live entertainment and we are sure there is a hunger amongst townspeople for these events – we are already planning our next concert in October. Previously, people have had to travel to outlying villages to see these kinds of shows, but now Newark finally has a venue that can provide them.”
