About the event

251st Anniversary of the New Bern Resolves Celebration
Join SAR, DAR and other patriotic groups on August 23rd, 2025, in celebration of the 251st Anniversary of the NEW BERN RESOLVES!

The event begins at 9:30 a.m., with a parade starting commencing behind the North Carolina History Center to a one-hour ceremony on Tryon Palace's South Lawn, beginning at approximately 10:00 a.m. It is suggested that attendees bring their own chairs.

The New Bern Resolves constitute a significant chapter in the history of the American Revolution, reflecting the growing discontent of the colonies with British rule and their bold steps toward self-governance. Adopted on August 27, 1774, by 71 elected NC delegates to the First Provincial Congress in America, the New Bern Resolves represented an early, decisive expression of resistance to British policies and "The Intolerable Acts" (Boston Port/Trade Act, Massachusetts Government Act, Administration of Justice Act, and Quartering Acts) by calling for economic sanctions against Great Britain and its trading partners. As one of the earliest documented calls for solidarity among the colonies, the New Bern Resolves laid the groundwork for broader revolutionary movements.

In addition to inspiring other communities in North Carolina to adopt similar measures, the New Bern Resolves helped galvanize support at the First Continental Congress, that convened in Philadelphia from 5 September to 26 October 1774. Representatives from the colonies coordinated a collective response to British policies via economic sanctions outlined in the Continental Association. The event is FREE and open to the public. (An Admittance Ticket to the Tryon Palace Historic Site & Gardens will be required after 11:00 am.)
