Mokuhanga, the traditional Japanese woodblock printing technique, allows you to print luminous colors with easy registration and without the use of solvents or a printing press. This 6-week class is an introductory class where you will learn basic of printmaking process starting from transferring image onto the block, using various carving tools to make your images. Printing is done by hand with a traditional Japanese “baren,” using water-based gouache. We will also learn to edition multi-color prints on kozo paper.

Takuji Hamanaka is an artist and printmaker living in Brooklyn, New York. He was an apprentice in traditional woodcut printmaking at Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints in Tokyo, Japan. His works are included in the collections of the Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; the Fleming Museum, The University of Vermont, Burlington, VT; the New York Presbyterian Hospital; Fidelity Investments Corporate Art Collection; among others. He has been a recipient of two NYFA Fellowships, KALA Fellowship, and MacDowell Fellowship.
