Howard Schatz has had a long and remarkable career as a photographer, combining fine art and commercial work with equal success. In fact, his personal projects have become gorgeous coffee table books, 24 of them, with his newest book being PAIRS!How does he do it? He’s always thinking, working, experimenting and inventing. There is no off switch on Howard's creativity. One of his lessons for students has been, ”I want to do everything!” And he kind-of has, and continues to do just that.
In this presentation, Howard will discuss the ideas and inspirations that lead to the creativity of the stunning images that have defined his remarkable career, such as the image here, one of his most recent, 'Ballerinas at the Last Supper’. He will also discuss how those images were executed. This talk promises to impart incredibly valuable lessons for any artist.
This will be an in-person only event, held at Soho Photo Gallery's NEW location: 539 West 23rd Street, Chelsea, NYC.

Speaker Bio: Howard Schatz:
Howard Schatz’s fine art photographs have been published in 23 books and have been exhibited in museums and galleries in the United States and around the world. His early monographs include Homeless: Portraits of Americans in Hard Times; Seeing Red: The Rapture of Redheads; Newborns and Waterdance.
Schatz’s is particularly known for his underwater work with dancers; his motion studies and light studies; portraiture and explorations of physical form. His underwater imagery has been published in three major books, WaterDance, Pool Light and H2O. His book of dance: Passion & Line and subsequent projects like Athlete, BodyKnots, NudeBodyNude and With Child are all further explorations of the human body. Schatz explored the psychological and theatrical aspects of performance in In Character: Actors Acting and Caught in the Act.
His images have appeared in innumerable publications, including Vanity Fair, Vogue, The New York Times Magazine, Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated, and GQ.
Schatz’s fine art work is represented by galleries, including Lawrence Fine Art (East Hampton), Gallery M (Denver), Preiss Fine Arts (Vienna) and Staley-Wise Gallery (New York).
Schatz has done advertising photography for hundreds of companies, among them: Cirque du Soleil, Paul Taylor Dance and The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and brand projects for clients such as Armani, Adidas, Sony, Nike, Escada and Ralph Lauren, Aigner and Haagen-Dazs.
