Join artist Teté Montero for a deep dive into the poetic world of Cabinets of Curiosities, or wunderkammer—early collections of rare, unusual, or meaningful objects that blurred the boundaries between science, art, nature, and imagination. Originating in the Renaissance—and often seen as precursors to modern museums—these cabinets were more than displays; they told stories, revealed personal obsessions, and reflected the mysteries of the world.
Through illustrated lectures, art prompts, and exercises, we’ll deepen our relationship with your collections and creative vision. We’ll learn to see keepsakes as more than objects—recognizing their narrative, mystery, and emotional resonance—and investigate strategies for organizing, displaying, and preserving special items, focusing on what makes a cabinet feel alive, intentional, and even sacred.
Over the course of five weeks, we’ll trace the fascinating history of Cabinets of Curiosity and examine how contemporary artists are reimagining the practice. Along the way, we’ll reflect on the ethics and impulses behind collecting, and how personal treasures become tools for storytelling, connection, and creative expression..
Participants will gain a deeper appreciation for their own collections, a stronger conceptual and aesthetic foundation for building or refining a cabinet, and a renewed sense of their relationship to memory, beauty, and wonder. Whether you’re an artist, a collector of memorabilia, ephemera, relics, or natural objects, or simply drawn to unique items charged with story and emotion, this course will offer inspiration, structure, and a creative framework for engaging more deeply with what you hold dear. No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a love for meaningful objects.
Teté Montero(she/her) is a Mexican artist and art educator who mindfully approaches creativity teaching as an engaging journey. With a unique, quirky, innovative style, she inspires through education, art projects and storytelling, representing her artistic, disabled, neurodivergent, and BIPOC identity. She also creates unique art pieces in her studio.
