NHGCA Curator Audra Verona Lambert outlines aspects of women-run art spaces and community-driven women's networks have impacted art and culture from their zenith in the 1970s to their continuation into the present day: this talk introduces the 'women's movement' before zooming in on the New York City-based Heresies collective and mag -- the topic of the curator's master's thesis at Lindenwood University -- also touching on similar women's groups in Los Angeles and Chicago before reflecting on WIG: Arlene Feiner's beloved New Harmony-based Women's Institute and Gallery, with anecdotes from local artists and community members. Presenter bio: Audra Verona Lambert is an art historian, writer and curator based in New Harmony, Indiana and working across the Midwest, Northeast and Southern United States. She has curated over 40 exhibitions, and her art criticism has appeared in international publications such as Texte zur Kunst, Whitehot Mag for Contemporary Art, Cultbytes, The Culture Trip, Untapped Cities and other cultural publications. For 4 years she ran ANTE Curatorial at The Yard, Williamsburg, where she curated 14 exhibitions over 4 years in addition to independently curated shows with museums and galleries such as the Center for Jewish History, NYC Parks Dept's Arsenale Gallery,Radiator Gallery, Fountain House Gallery, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and more. Her projects have been covered by Hyperallergic, Artwork Archive, and Quiet Lunch mag. She is curating an upcoming solo exhibit of works by artist Pavlina Vagioni in Indianapolis in early 2026.
Lambert holds an MA, Art History & Visual Culture, completing a thesis covering select Issues of feminist artist-led Heresies Mag. She holds a dual undergraduate degree in Art History and Asian Studies with a minor in Business, and she completed an Asian Studies certificate abroad at Kansai Gaidai University (2008) in Hirakata City, Japan. She studied abroad on a Connor Fellowship in Fall 2017 where she researched public art in Germany and Turkey.
