About the event
Understanding Jonkonnu
Join us for "Understanding Jonkonnu" and explore how Jonkonnu reflects a powerful story of resistance, identity, and community passed down through generations.
St. Sya Academy in Durham, NC has embraced Jonkonnu as a vibrant cultural expression that connects people to the African diaspora. Through movement, rhythm, and storytelling, the Academy presents Jonkonnu not simply as a performance, but as an educational journey into resilience, creativity, and heritage.
The event will begin with an introduction of the African tradition of the harvest festivals during this season followed by the Caribbean and African American practice of Jonkonnu with Baba Johnny from St. Vincent and Baba Thomasi from North Carolina. Daphne "Mama Noni" Davis will share the history of Jonkonnu and the Ghanaian history of Gyan Guah or Gyan Coni of the Ahanta people, whose legacy traveled with Ghanaian captives during the Maafa. St. Sya students will also perform. If time allows, the event will be followed by a session for questions from the audience.
An exciting opportunity to learn about a tradition with a rich local history, this event will be enjoyable for the whole family! This event is free to attend, but we recommend attendees RSVP.
