About the event

“Shakespeare’s ‘Now': Language, Structure, Power.”
📢 Annonce de conférence

As part of the expert meetings of the project Capturing the Present in Northwestern Europe (1348-1648), Margaret Tudeau-Clayton (University of Neuchâtel) will give a conference at the University of Neuchâtel on 26 November, entitled: “Shakespeare’s ‘Now': Language, Structure, Power.”

In early Shakespeare initial ‘now’ is used, as it is by fellow playwrights, to structure the dramatic design in utterances by male figures of authority who seize control of the action even as they capture the present. In his late plays Shakespeares use ‘now’ rather for its expressive value in utterances by characters across the genders and classes. The present is now less captured than received.
