“What is TOTAL DESTRUCTION?”
TOTAL DESTRUCTION (TD) is a long-running hardcore party series organized by Superbad MIDI Breaks since 2012.
From the very beginning, TD has served as a platform for uncompromising sound, connecting underground DJs and party people across Japan, Asia, and the world.
“What is hardcore?” “What is the underground?”
Superbad MIDI Breaks has continually answered these questions through the form of TOTAL DESTRUCTION.
Over the past 13 years, TD has evolved into a crossroads of hardcore culture — transcending borders, genres, and scenes.
What TD brought to Japan was nothing less than an opening of the gates: a direct connection and confrontation with the world.
It has welcomed dozens of international artists, built lasting networks, and pushed the boundaries of the hardcore scene time and again.
Now, with its 22nd edition, the series comes to a close.
No sequels. No comebacks. No reboots.
It ends here.
One final impact — TOTAL DESTRUCTION 22: LAST IMPACT.
“Before TOTAL DESTRUCTION ever began…”
The night before TOTAL DESTRUCTION, 2011.
SBMB was throwing street parties on the road in front of Yoyogi Park, using a car loaded with a sound system.
Why street parties?
Because SBMB was originally founded as an urban-style sound system crew.
At the time, most parties were raves deep in the mountains—I couldn’t relate to that.
And also, I had been banned from several clubs.
There were many reasons, but one of them was blasting this sound system so hard it destroyed the club’s lights, booze, and glasses... well, I probably shouldn’t say more than that. Hahaha.
Humans are strange creatures.
At first, the very idea of a street party feels anti-social, outrageous—and that’s what makes it attractive.
I mean, we were blasting hardcore with a full sound system right in the middle of Tokyo. Hahaha.
That’s why so many DJs wanted to join and play.
But once they actually started playing, and did it a few times, they began to feel different urges and doubts.
“Is this really meaningful?” “Wouldn’t it be better to play in a freer space, without the cops surrounding us?”
That’s what we call “getting used to it”—a kind of complacency.
At some point, even the street parties and SBMB itself became inertia, a graveyard for DJs who had nowhere else to go.
This doesn’t just apply to street parties.
It’s the kind of mindset DJs fall into when they don’t understand what it means to create a party.
I don’t think that way, but the reality is, people do end up thinking like that.
That’s why I made the first move.
I proposed that the DJs involved should create a party that reflected the DJs they truly respected—their ideal party.
So SBMB started selling water and beer at street parties, and planned to use the revenue to throw free parties at clubs.
Of course, there was debate over who to invite as guest DJs.
Some said, “Not that guy,” others said, “This one’s good.”
Honestly, I remember thinking, “Who the hell do you think you are to be talking like that?” Hahaha.
Then, a few bailed when they found out parties cost real money.
Honestly, if that’s the level of understanding and commitment you have, don’t talk to me about SBMB or parties at all.
And so, the future SBMB crew was cut in half. Hahaha.
But even with that kind of start, TOTAL DESTRUCTION went on to last 13 years, with 22 events.
If TOTAL DESTRUCTION hadn’t happened, what would have become of Tokyo’s hardcore scene?
What would’ve happened to my own expression?
We don’t live in a parallel world—but I doubt SBMB or I would exist the way we do now.
Anyway, I’m proud of TOTAL DESTRUCTION.
Thank you, TOTAL DESTRUCTION.
You’ve already fulfilled your role in Japan.
Goodbye, TD.
