Elderberry is a valuable and abundant Ohio native plant with a long history of use around the world. The market for elderberry - fresh, frozen, dried, or made into shelf stable products such as syrup, jam, jelly, or wine - is increasing as its benefits become more widely known.
Although elderberry grows readily and can produce heavily, removing the berries from the stem can be time consuming. Fortunately, Rural Action's Herb Hub has specialized elderberry destemming equipment to reduce the workload significantly.
Bring your elderberry harvest to the event and use the automatic or manual destemming equipment, or just come to watch. Attendees can also tour the ACEnet kitchen - a food-safe facility certified by the Ohio Department of Agriculture - and see the Herb Hub and its shared-use equipment for washing, drying, processing, packaging, and shipping herbs to specific buyers.
Drop in for a few minutes, or stay the whole time to connect with other elderberry growers and herb enthusiasts. Herb growers and creators of herbal products are encouraged to attend.
Note: Elderberry are generally considered safe when they are cooked, but can be toxic when raw.
