Public Science Talk: Low trophic aquaculture in Aotearoa

Join us to discover Cawthron Institute’s innovative work in low trophic aquaculture.

New Zealand is a world-leader in low trophic aquaculture, the farming of aquatic primary consumers like seaweeds and aquatic primary producers like shellfish, exemplified by our iconic Greenshell™ mussel farming sector.

Low trophic species naturally grow efficiently, so by farming the right species we can sustainably deliver high-value products to domestic and international consumers.

Patrick Cahill, Cawthron Group Manager for Biosecurity and co-lead of the Shellfish Aquaculture Research Platform, will present work being undertaken to deliver volume and value from low trophic aquaculture using examples of total domestication of the Greenshell™ mussel, seaweed and shellfish new species pipelines, and a seafood functional health claim.
