Botany Lecture: Hints of Nantucket in North Carolina

Join us for this fascinating botany lecture in collaboration with the Nantucket Conservation Foundation

The Atlantic coastal plain ecological province is famous for its botanical richness, with biodiversity hotspots stretching from Florida to the Cape and Islands of Massachusetts. Although biodiversity is greater in southern latitudes, certain patterns of vegetation form a common thread that make for a familiar backdrop even when one is far from home. Drawing on his experiences botanizing in coastal plain habitats in North Carolina (as well as South Carolina, Virginia and New Jersey), Peter will give a visual tour of some southern habitats, with special focus on the plants shared with the past and present Nantucket flora.

Peter Grima works as a Service Forester in northern Berkshire County – also known as the complete opposite corner of the state from Nantucket! – for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation. He is also an accomplished botanist responsible for many discoveries of rare and interesting plants across the Commonwealth, including Nantucket. He is coauthor of the 2020 Vascular Flora of Franklin County, Massachusetts, and a collaborator on the upcoming Flora of Mount Toby in western Massachusetts.
