Gallery Nostrum will host solo-exhibitions from Bart Dewolf and Laurent Dierick in 2026.
But we are too impatient to wait to show you how fantastic their art is and will use these summer-weeks to present a carefully selected visually arresting and thought-provoking group of works which will make you as eager as we are for MORE.
The works selected by the two artists complement each of perfectly both in the subject matter and themes they explore and the materials and techniques they expertly utilise for each specific piece.
At first glance the surreal installations of Bart Dewolf (1973 Brabant Be) look like they are pulled straight from the pages of a graphic novel. His 3-dimensional illustrations illuminate the strange and alienating world he wanders in.
Objects present themselves to him discoveries from flea markets or scrapyards army surplus stores and the occasional aircraft recycling plant. - Rejects from a material world are his resource actors and muse.
A coincidental encounter from objects that have no original relevant reason to be combined can be enough to start a new creative endeavour. A narrative or theme can also drive the process where each assemblage translates ‘his’ observations to the viewer with satire and sarcasm - reinterpreting through caricature what often began with a strong intuitive feeling now independent of their creator.
The breadth of training and skills Bart has acquired to this point are too numerous and varied to list here. In addition to traveling the world solving problems and facilitating the creative endeavours of others in 1998 he received a master of visual arts advertising and graphic design at st Lukas Brussels and has participated in numerous international exhibitions including the Robodock Manifestival in Rotterdam and Amsterdam 2003 2004 2005 Mental Zirkus Supamolly Berlin 2006 “Free wireless-free refill” installation for CPDP Halles de Schaerbeek Brussels 20011 “kNOw HATE” multi-disciplinary tour Hasselt Brussels Torino Milano 2018 exhibition at La Zone Castries (Montpellier) 2021.

Laurent Dierick (1978) was born in Etterbeek (Belgium). Despite having no inclination for painting and dragging his feet during school museum visits Laurent followed his unpredictable selftaught instincts. At 16 against all odds he turned to oil painting. Influenced by numerous references from Velázquez to Basquiat he works with the pictorial material in a visceral way becoming one with the object of his desire. Fascinated by texture and trained in painting restoration he is devoted to the reinterpretation of images and artistic appropriation and has developed a vast body of work rooted deep in the history of art but not limited to specific styles or techniques.
The works presented in Pledges of Allegiance at Gallery Nostrum originate from two distinct series created respectively in 2015 and 2016. Three works on paper from the FIRE series are shown alongside an allegorical painting entitled The Leg Dream dating from 2016.
Oscillating between text colour and material these pieces weave a visual language that is at once explicit and enigmatic. They draw us into a singular universe—suspended somewhere between the innocence of childhood and the lucidity of the adult world—a shifting terrain inhabited by fear nostalgia and a longing for rebellion.
Gallery Nostrum had been a fan of Laurent long before we were lucky enough to include his work in the group exhibition “Burn baby! Burn!” (2024 Wavre). Laurent’s skills are multi-faceted and he is able to traverse between a variety of styles formats techniques and materials while retaining a unified vision. He is an accomplished musician and recording artist with a background in art history painting restoration and conservation. His numerous exhibitions include “FIRE” @ Macadam Gallery Brussels Be 2015 ART UP! Grand Palais Lille Fr 2015 Solo show - Le Monty Genappe Be 2019 “Fragment Memory” Centre d’art de Rouge-Cloître Brussels Be 2024.

La Gallery Nostrum accueillera les expositions individuelles de Bart Dewolf et de Laurent Dierick en 2026.
Mais nous sommes trop impatients pour vous montrer à quel point leur art est fantastique et nous profiterons de ces semaines d'été pour présenter un groupe d'œuvres soigneusement sélectionnées visuellement saisissantes et stimulantes qui vous rendront aussi impatients que nous pour PLUS.
Les œuvres sélectionnées par les deux artistes se complètent parfaitement tant par les sujets et les thèmes qu'elles explorent que par les matériaux et les techniques qu'elles utilisent avec expertise pour chaque pièce spécifique.
À première vue les installations surréalistes de Bart Dewolf (1973 Brabant Be) semblent tout droit sorties des pages d'un roman graphique. Ses illustrations en trois dimensions illuminent le monde étrange et aliénant dans lequel il se promène. Des objets se présentent à lui des découvertes provenant de marchés aux puces ou de parcs à ferraille de magasins de surplus de l'armée et à l'occasion d'usines de recyclage d'avions. Les rebuts d'un monde matériel sont ses ressources ses acteurs et sa muse.
Une rencontre fortuite entre des objets qui n'ont aucune raison originale d'être combinés peut suffire à lancer un nouveau projet créatif. Un récit ou un thème peut également être à l'origine du processus chaque assemblage traduisant « ses » observations au spectateur avec satire et sarcasme - réinterprétant par la caricature ce qui a souvent commencé par un sentiment intuitif fort désormais indépendant de son créateur.
L'étendue de la formation et des compétences que Bart a acquises jusqu'à présent est trop nombreuse et variée pour être énumérée ici. Laurent Dierick (1978) est né à Etterbeek (Belgique). Bien qu'il n'ait aucun penchant pour la peinture et qu'il traîne les pieds lors de visites muséales scolaires Laurent suit son instinct capricieux d'autodidacte. À 16 ans contre toute attente il se tourne vers la peinture à l'huile. Habité par de nombreuses références de Vélasquez à Basquiat il travaille la substance picturale de manière viscérale ne faisant qu’un avec l'objet de ses désirs. Fasciné par la matière et doté d’une formation en restauration de peintures il voue un culte à la réinterprétation de l’image et au détournement et ne cesse de rechercher sans limite de styles ni de techniques en développant une oeuvre tentaculaire prenant ses racines au plus profond de l’histoire de l’art.
Les œuvres présentées dans l’exposition Pledges of Allegince à la Gallery Nostrum sont issues de deux séries distinctes réalisées respectivement en 2015 et 2016. Trois pièces sur papier extraites de la série FIRE accompagnent une toile allégorique intitulée The Leg Dream datant de 2016.
Oscillant entre texte couleur et matière ces créations tissent un langage visuel à la fois explicite et énigmatique. Elles nous entraînent dans un univers singulier suspendu quelque part entre l’innocence de l’enfance et la lucidité du monde adulte — un territoire mouvant habité par la peur la nostalgie et un désir de révolte.
La Galerie Nostrum était déjà fan de Laurent bien avant d'avoir la chance d'inclure son travail dans l'exposition collective "Burn baby! Burn!" (2024 Wavre). Les compétences de Laurent sont multiples et il est capable de passer d'une variété de styles de formats de techniques et de matériaux à une autre tout en conservant une vision unifiée. Il est un musicien accompli et un artiste de l'enregistrement avec une formation en histoire de l'art en restauration de peinture et en conservation. Il a participé à de nombreuses expositions “FIRE” @ Macadam Gallery Brussels Be 2015 ART UP! Grand Palais Lille Fr 2015 Solo show - Le Monty Genappe Be 2019 “Fragment Memory” Centre d’art de Rouge-Cloître Brussels Be 2024.
