T H U M P is where the deep groove lives.
Named in tribute to the legendary bass pioneers—Louis “Thunder Thumbs” Johnson, Bootsy Collins, and Larry Graham—this band channels the spirit of the slap, the thump, and that unmistakable funk heartbeat that shook the world and never stopped. Their music is a love letter to the bass: the pulse that brings people together, drives the rhythm, and lifts the soul.
But T H U M P isn’t just about the low end—it’s a full-blown celebration of the funk tradition and its party-loving, free-spirited energy. Syncopated rhythms, hot horns, gritty grooves, and that irresistible swang all collide in a sound that nods to Dumpstaphunk, Jon Cleary, Lettuce, The Meters, Dr. John, and the Soul Rebels, while still honoring the greats of soul, funk, and jazz who paved the way.
At the core is bassist and bandleader Oj “The Juice” Newcomb, laying down thick, buttery basslines with authority. Vocalists Clint Francis and Oscar Richardson lead with grit and soul, while Brodie Graham and Mark Moroney weave tasteful, dynamic guitar lines. Andrew “Mouse” Szumowski brings rich textures on keys with Hammond and Rhodes tones, and Jacob Mann keeps it deep in the pocket on drums. The band’s horn section is a storm of brass energy: Dyon Tahana (alto sax), Clint Allen (trumpet), Mark Spencer (tenor sax), and Ben Young (trombone), lighting up stages like a brass band leading a block party through the French Quarter.
On special nights, T H U M P turns up the heat even further with guest percussionists like Terepai Richmond, Charles “Bobby Alu” Wall, Mitch “Crispy” Francis, Scott Nosworthy, Tanja Hafenstein, and Jackie Barnes—some of the best in the game.
Members of T H U M P have played with artists like John Butler Trio, Xavier Rudd, Afro Dizzi Act, Band of Frequencies, Dave Orr Band, Jaguar Jonze, The Whitlams, and Resin Dogs—bringing a rich legacy of live experience and musical firepower from across Australia’s scene.
T H U M P is a joyful collision of funk, soul, and New Orleans spirit. It’s music for dancing, for feeling, for connecting. When the THUMP drops, the room moves.
Come join the groove.
