About the event

Movie Night at Zion Hill: The Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot
Discover the true story of a small Texas town that changed 77 lives—an unforgettable night of hope, courage, and community.

About this Event

Nacogdoches Historic Sites invites the public to a free screening of The Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at Zion Hill Historic Site, located at 324 N. Lanana Street. Produced by Angel Studios, this powerful film tells the true story of Reverend Martin and Donna Martin of Possum Trot, a small community in Shelby County, just an hour southeast of Nacogdoches. Inspired to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children, the Martins and 22 families from their church, Bennett Chapel, came together to adopt 77 children from the foster care system.

The evening will include special opening remarks and a post-screening Q&A session with the film’s producers, Rebekah and Josh Weigel. Their firsthand insight into the making of this heartfelt story adds an intimate layer to an already moving experience. The values at the heart of The Sound of Hope—faith, compassion, and a commitment to community—resonate strongly with the legacy of Zion Hill Baptist Church, which for decades supported local youth, college students, and neighborhood families through programs rooted in care and shared responsibility.

In 2024, the film was nominated for Best Drama at the Septimius Awards, an international film festival in Amsterdam that celebrates excellence in global storytelling. It also earned a Best Actor award for Demetrius Grosse and received nominations for Best Actress (Nika King) and Best Director (Joshua Weigel).

While uplifting and inspirational, the film deals with emotionally powerful real-life themes involving the foster care system and is rated PG-13. Viewer discretion is advised. More information on film content and ratings can be found at Angel.com.

This event is free and open to the public with permission from Angel Studios. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP online or by calling or texting 936-560-4441. For more information, visit nactx.us/historicsites or email aGlzdG9yaWNzaXRlcyB8IG5hY3R4ICEgdXM=.
