Despite being future healthcare providers, a significant proportion of medical students in Bangladesh graduate without adequate exposure to research. Studies suggest that over 70% of medical students in South Asia report having little to no formal training in research methodology or scientific writing. In Bangladesh, opportunities for undergraduate research remain limited—only an estimated 10–15% of students ever engage in publishing or presenting research during their medical school years.
Early-year students are particularly underrepresented, as research opportunities are usually targeted toward final-year students or postgraduates. Consequently, nearly 60% of first- and second-year students report lacking confidence in designing or presenting even a simple research project. This gap not only limits students’ academic growth but also weakens the country’s future capacity for evidence-based healthcare.
“Light on Research 2.0” addresses this gap by offering beginner-friendly research training sessions and a competitive platform, with the goal of empowering medical students to gain practical skills in abstract writing, case reporting, and scientific presentation.
To strengthen the research competency of medical students in Bangladesh by equipping them with foundational skills in research methodology, ethics, and scientific writing, while also providing a national platform to present and showcase their original ideas, case reports, and proposals—ultimately fostering a culture of student-led research and critical thinking within BMSS.
