About the event

I-ASIST (Indigenous Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)
I-ASIST is a 2-day suicide intervention skills training delivered by Indigenous trainers providing culturally appropriate suicide first aid.

About this Event

I-ASIST is a two-day suicide first aid workshop developed in partnership with Indigenous communities. Based on the internationally recognised LivingWorks ASIST program, I-ASIST is culturally adapted to strengthen participants’ skills and confidence in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who may be at risk of suicide.

Workshops are led by experienced Indigenous Trainers and delivered using a mix of presentations, small group learning, practical activities, and videos. The program is based on the LivingWorks Pathway for Assisting Life (PAL) model and incorporates the Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Framework to ensure a culturally safe and responsive approach. No prior experience or formal training is required—I-ASIST is open to anyone who wants to make a difference in their community.

Two-day workshop features:

  • Presentations and guidance from First Nations LivingWorks registered trainers
  • A scientifically proven intervention model
  • Powerful audio-visual learning aids
  • Group yarns
  • Skills practice and development
  • A balance of challenge and safety

CATERING: Lunch and light refreshments provided

Who should attend?

This training is suitable for:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and Elders
  • Educators
  • Frontline Service Workers
  • Allies who work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and want to enhance their cultural capability

Why Should I attend?

Suicide rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are 2-3 times higher than non-Indigenous Australian, with young people particularly at risk.

You will learn how to recognise warning signs and reach in to someone who may be having thoughts of suicide and help connect them to support in their communities.

What to expect

  • Indigenous-Led - Delivered by an experienced Indigenous trainer to ensure cultural safety and relevance.
  • Yarning circles - Storytelling using the social and emotional wellbeing framework to creat open supportive conversations.
  • Safe learning environment - Facilitated in a way that respects local cultural protocols and lived experiences.
