With specialist educators: Ellie Carless, Zoos SA, English teaching specialist and Jade Cornish, SA Water, Art teaching specialist
This session, brought to you by the teams at SA Water and Zoos South Australia, focuses on using natural surroundings as a springboard for creating texts through writing or art. Teachers will participate in a range of wellbeing, writing, and artistic activities through guided sensory walks, including a poem-tree exercise, nature storytelling, and water art creations—all designed to foster a connection to the natural world, bridging conservation to the imagination.
Spending time in nature has been shown to improve wellbeing and foster emotional resilience, with one large-scale review finding that nature connectedness is consistently associated with feeling good and functioning well (Pritchard et al., 2019). Activities like these not only improve students’ creative and literacy skills but can also play a role in enhancing their mental health and sense of place in the world (Capaldi et al., 2014; McEwan et al., 2019).
Offering a range of adaptable activities, both inside and outside the classroom, that encourage students to engage deeply with their environment and translate those experiences into meaningful writing and art. Participants will leave equipped with tools to enhance creativity, improve literacy skills, and connect students with nature.
