The Friday Forum at The Deuce promises an enlightening and engaging experience thanks to the collaboration with Icelandic Roots. This event, rooted in the mission of education, brings together a series of captivating presentations to showcase our connections, heritage, and culture of Iceland.

Kicking off the afternoon is Sunna Olafson Furstenau, a familiar face within our community, discussing the North Dakota and Minnesota Icelandic settlements and people.

Following Sunna is Jason Doctor, a professor of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. He leads the Saga Project, Public Webinars, and other special projects and programs for Icelandic Roots.

The third speaker will be Claudia Petursson. She will delve into Njal's Saga, offering attendees a unique chance to engage with this legendary narrative through her traveling tapestry. Her work vividly illustrates the saga’s enduring impact over a millennium later.

Next on stage is Aaron Kennedy, Associate Professor in Atmospheric Sciences at the University of North Dakota. His research focuses on observing and understanding hazardous weather events such as blizzards and severe storms. Freshly returned from his Fulbright Scholar stint in Iceland's remote Westfjords under the National Science Foundation Arctic Research Grant, he worked with the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Aaron will talk about his experiences studying hazardous weather in North Dakota and in Iceland and why both regions serve as the ultimate testing ground for weather instrumentation he has developed. He will compare and contrast the weather both regions receive and showcase images of snowflakes his instruments have taken and pick up some weather terms in Icelandic, too.

Concluding the program is an opportunity for FREE access to the Icelandic Roots Database. Genealogists and IR volunteers will be at the MCC in this informal session from 2 to 3 pm on Friday. The presentation to learn about this amazing database and historical treasure site is open to the public and to our supporting members. If you fill out the cousins form and pre-register, you can have access to the database for the weekend and every person you see -- check how you are related!!! (privacy policies apply.)

To enhance your experience, please complete a "Cousins Across the Ocean" form. https://www.icelandicroots.com/cousins-across-the-ocean

If you did not pre-register and fill out the Cousins form, you are still welcome to attend and will receive a generic username and password for a few hours.
