The protection of hollow-bearing trees in Australia

Come and hear from Ella Marshall, WPSQ intern, on her work with hollow-bearing trees

During Ella Marshall’s three-month internship with Wildlife Queensland through the University of Queensland, she researched the protection of hollow-bearing trees in Australia, with a particular focus on Queensland and surrounding local areas. This project enabled Ella to develop a comprehensive understanding of the ecological importance and functions of hollow-bearing trees, as well as the legislative frameworks and associated limitations across various states.

Ella’s research primarily focused on three key areas: legislation, the impacts of logging and firewood harvesting, and the effects of fire on hollow-bearing trees.

The recommendations Ella developed aim to encourage future government action to strengthen the protection of these ecologically significant trees.
