"Embrace the Ruck" Remembrance March

On Saturday morning, May 25th, Mount Prospect Police Military Veterans are hosting this event as a way to remember and honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

This free 6.2 mile walk begins and ends at the Lions Park Veterans Memorial Bandshell, and takes walkers through the neighborhoods of Mount Prospect. The event is sponsored by Mount Prospect Police Department military veterans and is open to the public. **Due to the distance, it is recommended for ages 13 and older, but younger children may attend at a parent’s discretion and under their watch.

What is a “Ruck March?” The term, “Ruck,” originates from the military backpack carried throughout the march, which contains various tools and materials. The average weight of the ruck can range from 20-75 lbs., depending on the mission. The distance of a ruck march can vary from 3-20 miles through an array of terrain and weather obstacles. Military veterans often hold ruck marches as a way to raise awareness of issues veterans face, such as mental health struggles, homelessness, and suicide. This march, in particular, is a march to honor the memory of those who died in action. **Wearing of a backpack, or ruck, is optional for this event.
