Witness the collisions of past, present and future with authors Julie Hensley and Wes Blake as they discuss their new books at CoffeeTree Books on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 5:00 p.m.
Set in the Arkansas mountains, Julie Hensley's Five Oaks follows three generations of fiercely determined young women poised for self-discovery in a decades-spanning novel about the bonds of family and secrets.
Spending summer away from home for the first time, 15-year-old Wren Stone and her younger sister, Sylvie, arrive at Five Oaks, their grandparents’ Arkansas lake house. As it was for their grandmother and mother before them, it’s a place for coming of age, first love, triumphs and failures, and keeping secrets.
This year, it’s Wren’s end-of-girlhood season. And Sylvie vows to keep all her secrets ... Then one night, Wren doesn’t come home.
When the truth comes to light—about mothers, daughters, and sisters—no one in the family will ever be the same.
Wes Blake's Pineville Trace is an “introspective, haunting tale that remains with us” (Heavy Feather Review) about a former revival preacher who walks away from an Eastern Kentucky prison in the 1970s, following a cat named Buffalo and trying to reconcile himself with his past. After Frank escapes prison, his journey to find meaning in the absence of his former life as a charismatic traveling preacher leads him all up and down the US and Canada, delving into his own memories and questions of faith, family, self, and stories—and where those stories lead us.
Julie Hensley is an Appalachian writer, raised in the mountains of Virginia. She is the author of Viable, a collection of poetry, and Landfall: A Ring of Stories. She lives in Kentucky with her family.
Wes Blake is the author of Pineville Trace, winner of the Etchings Press Novella Prize and finalist for the Feathered Quill Book Award for Debut Author. He lives in Nonesuch, Ky., with his wife and cats, where they’ve planted over 100 trees.
