WHAT TO EXPECT:
Namaqualand is already well known for its abundant annual wildflowers in springtime, especially after good winter rains. However, this special region in the southwestern part of South Africa has much more to offer than you might expect. Its unique landscapes are home not only to the extraordinary flowers and succulents that Namaqualand is famous for but also to some of the friendliest and most welcoming people, whose hospitality is hard to match.
We will travel on roads and tracks less frequented by tourists or buses to fully experience the beauty and warm hospitality that Namaqualand has to offer.
Our journey will take us through the diverse regions of Namaqualand—starting in the mountains, across desolate plains, and down to the coastal region bordering the cold Atlantic Ocean.
We will camp on private farms where the night skies will amaze you like never before. Every evening, we will gather around the campfire to revisit the day’s adventures while enjoying the breathtaking starlit skies that only the clear Namaqualand nights can provide.
Along the coast, we will encounter unique wildflowers and enjoy special wines produced along the cold Atlantic shores. We’ll traverse a coastal 4x4 route where diamond miners once sought their fortunes—some succeeding, others losing everything—before circling back to the Namaqualand highlands to conclude the trip on a farm near Springbok.
Approximately 90% of the route consists of dirt roads and two-track trails, with minimal use of paved roads. This journey is ideal for those who love driving the roads less traveled and want to better acquaint themselves with their vehicle's capabilities. The trails are not overly challenging, making them suitable for everyone, from novice to experienced overlanders.
This 8-day trip is designed to avoid tourist hotspots, meaning it’s quite possible you won’t encounter any other tourists for days! We will immerse ourselves in the slow pace and serene beauty of Namaqualand and the West Coast, a rare treasure in today’s fast-paced world.
Fuel will be available daily, except for the final stretch between Lutzville and Springbok. We will advise you on where to refuel.
