History of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Westmoreland County

Step back to the 1930s and explore how the Civilian Conservation Corps built one of Virginia’s most treasured parks. From cabins to trails, their hard work shaped the beauty we enjoy today.
Liam Fanning is an education specialist at Westmoreland State Park. He attended the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio, where he majored in history.

Fanning has worked as an archivist at the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor National Museum in Wellsburg, West Virginia, and as a horticultural researcher at Stratford Hall. Fanning is a life-long resident of Westmoreland County and while at Westmoreland State Park, he has been conducting original research on the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Westmoreland County.
