Every meme has its story. #SKODEN delves into the origins of NDN Country’s most iconic meme to redefine the man at the center of it all — Pernell Bad Arm. In the early days of social media, a notorious image of an Indigenous man with raised fists circulated widely, used to mock and reinforce stereotypes of Indigenous peoples. Then one word added to the image changed it forever. SKODEN—an Indigenous shortening of “let’s go then”—ignited an instant Indigenous pop-culture icon that spread like wildfire across Turtle Island and beyond.
Behind the viral fame was a kind and generous Blackfoot man from Kainai who faced immense challenges while living on the streets. This documentary seeks to reclaim Pernell’s humanity, offering a deeper, more complex portrait of the man behind the meme. This is his story.

Chaque mème a son histoire. #SKODEN explore les origines du mème le plus emblématique du pays NDN afin de redéfinir l’homme au centre de tout cela — Pernell Bad Arm. Au début des réseaux sociaux, une image tristement célèbre d’un homme autochtone, les poings levés, a circulé largement, utilisée pour se moquer et renforcer des stéréotypes sur les peuples autochtones. Puis un mot ajouté à l’image l’a changée à jamais. SKODEN — une abréviation autochtone de « let’s go then » (« allons-y alors ») — a donné naissance à une icône de la culture pop autochtone qui s’est répandue comme une traînée de poudre à travers l’Île de la Tortue et au-delà.
Mais derrière cette renommée virale se trouvait un homme pied-noir (Blackfoot) gentil et généreux, originaire de Kainai, qui a dû faire face à d’immenses défis alors qu’il vivait dans la rue. Ce documentaire cherche à redonner à Pernell son humanité, en offrant un portrait plus profond et plus complexe de l’homme derrière le mème. Voici son histoire.
