Gordon Grdina RU’YA - رؤيا – feat. Ghalia Benali
Véritable création mondiale, RU’YA — « clairvoyance » ou « vision » en arabe — réunit six artistes issus de traditions musicales et de continents différents : la voix envoûtante de Ghalia Benali (Belgique/Tunisie), le piano lumineux de Elias Stemeseder (Autriche), le violon sensible d’Eylem Basaldi (Turquie/États-Unis), les percussions persanes de Hamin Honari (Canada), les rythmes inventifs de Christian Lillinger (Allemagne) et l’oud/guitare et compositeur Gordon Grdina (Canada), initiateur du projet.
Fruit de vingt ans d’exploration amorcés avec Think Like the Waves — premier album de Grdina — RU’YA s’aventure aux frontières de la tonalité, entremêlant jazz d’avant-garde, maqâm arabe et musique classique persane. Nourrie de la pensée poétique de Ghalia Benali, l’œuvre célèbre les poètes comme témoins de l’histoire humaine, capables de transformer mémoire, désir et blessures en un langage universel. RU’YA incarne une musique sans frontières, où la diversité des timbres et l’improvisation ouvrent un espace de dialogue entre les cultures et les époques.
EPIGRAPHS – John Hollenbeck
En ouverture, le percussionniste et compositeur John Hollenbeck propose Epigraphs, une suite de pièces qui repensent sans cesse leur propre matière. Inspirée de la surpeinture en arts visuels, sa démarche superpose de nouvelles idées sur les précédentes. Les partitions, soigneusement notées, sont jouées sans répétition préalable : musiciens et public découvrent ensemble la musique qui se déploie, entre suspension et mouvement. Chaque pièce s’ancre dans la force évocatrice d’épigraphes poétiques, invitant l’auditeur à un voyage sonore à la fois méditatif et imprévisible.

Gordon Grdina's RU’YA - رؤيا – feat Ghalia Benali
A true world premiere, RU’YA—“foresight” or “vision” in Arabic—brings together six artists from diverse musical traditions and continents: the spellbinding voice of Ghalia Benali (Belgium/Tunisia), the luminous piano of Elias Stemeseder (Austria), the sensitive violin of Eylem Basaldi (Turkey/USA), the Persian percussion of Hamin Honari (Canada), the inventive rhythms of drummer Christian Lillinger (Germany), and the oud/guitar of Gordon Grdina (Canada), the project’s initiator and composer.
The result of twenty years of exploration that began with Think Like the Waves—Grdina’s debut album—RU’YA ventures to the very edge of tonality, interweaving avant-garde jazz, Arabic maqam, and Persian classical music. Nourished by Ghalia Benali’s poetic vision, the work celebrates poets as true chroniclers of human history, capable of transforming memory, desire, and wounds into a universal language. This project embodies music without borders, where diverse timbres and improvisation create a fertile space for dialogue between cultures and eras.
EPIGRAPHS – John Hollenbeck
Opening the evening, percussionist and composer John Hollenbeck presents Epigraphs, a suite of pieces that continually reimagine their own material. Inspired by the visual-arts technique of overpainting, his approach layers new ideas over previous ones. Although carefully notated, the works are performed without rehearsal, so that musicians and audience discover the unfolding music together, suspended between motion and stillness. Each composition draws its primary lyrical impulse from poetic epigraphs, inviting listeners on a sonic journey that is both meditative and unpredictable.
