John Martello's Classic Film Class: The Grapes of Wrath (1940)

Director John Ford turned John Steinbeck's 1939 Pulitzer Prize winning novel into one of the great American films with a memorable performance by Henry Fonda as Tom Joad and sterling performances by the "Ford Stock Company." When he saw the completed film, Steinbeck said it was "…a hard, straight picture in which the actors are submerged so completely that it looks and feels like a documentary film and certainly it has a hard, truthful ring. No punches were pulled…"
