Year after year, Donna Hayes poured herself into this event, ensuring every detail was seen to, every table had a place, every participant felt welcome. She didn’t just organize a yard sale; she cultivated an experience of belonging, a tradition that stitched generations of Salem families closer together. Even after long hours spent in the school library, teaching summer programs, or volunteering for the Apple Butter Festival, Donna somehow always had time to give more of herself—to her church, her neighbors, her friends, and her beloved family.
This weekend, as we celebrate the 24th Annual Community-Wide Yard Sale, we do more than set out tables of keepsakes and bargains. We honor the woman who believed in us, who saw the magic in our small town and worked tirelessly to make it shine. We honor her love for Salem, her deep faith in community spirit, and her unwavering belief that people are better when they come together.
Donna Hayes may have left this world in 2021, but her presence lingers in every handshake exchanged over a yard sale table, every laugh shared on Valley Street, every friendship renewed on this day. Her heart is in the fabric of this event, and by continuing it year after year, we promise her this: Salem will never forget the gift she gave us.
