About the event

Women's Equality Day Luncheon
The City’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) hosts its annual Women’s Equality Day Luncheon and the biennial Ruth Wicker Tribute to Women Induction on Tuesday, August 26, at Barber Park Event Center, 1502 Barber Park Dr.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 am, followed by the program at noon. Tickets cost $35, or $25 if purchased before August 1. Secure tickets online at www.Greensboro-nc.gov/HRtickets.

This year’s luncheon features guest speaker Leah McNair, lead pastor of Circle City Church in High Point. An entrepreneur, speaker, and author, McNair is also the founder of The Sister Circle International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women.

The program also highlights the Tribute to Women’s third class of honorees, which consists of Starleana Green, Mayor Nancy Vaughan, Julia Walker, and Rachel Wilson. The women join the 46 individuals and four organizations previously enshrined in the permanent Tribute exhibit at Barber Park, which has celebrated local women for their achievements and contributions in specific areas since 2019.

A 2005 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Green has spent over two decades empowering others and giving back to the community. She is the founder of Real Life, Inc., a nonprofit that provides financial assistance, educational resources, and referrals to local families and single parents. Green’s work has focused on strengthening community support systems and promoting self-sufficiency for those in need.

Greensboro’s mayor since 2013, Vaughan will be honored for her leadership. She previously served as Greensboro’s Mayor Pro Tem and on its City Council, dating back to 1997. A member of several community boards, Vaughan has supported economic development, established community partnerships, and emphasized workforce opportunities to benefit Greensboro’s residents.

A recording artist, motivational speaker, and life coach, Wilson is honored for her achievements and contributions through creativity. She has impacted many people through her gospel music, inspirational videos, and Girl Talk International, the faith-based nonprofit organization she started in 2009 to empower and inspire women. Wilson also ministers at the Kingdom Vision Life Center in Greensboro and is the founder of Rachel Wilson Ministries, Inc.

Walker, a senior partner at Susan Hunt Law, where she provides estate planning services. She is recognized for developing and sharing community resources, including a YouTube series to increase public understanding of estate planning. Walker is a mentor and active participant with Campus Greensboro and synerG, local organizations dedicated to developing young professionals.

Created through a donation from the estate of Ruth Wicker, the Tribute to Women was established in 2019 to honor the contributions and achievements of Greensboro women. The free exhibit is open most Tuesdays from 10 am to 2 pm. Learn more and see the list of honorees on the City’s website at www.greensboro-nc.com/tributetowomen.

CSW’s mission is to improve the quality of life for women in Greensboro. Learn about the commission at www.greensboro-nc.gov/csw. Contact Belonging & Engagement Specialist Vonda Wingate in the Human Rights Department at 336-373-2995 for more information.
