Natural Dyes Workshop
About this Event
Join us for a hands-on workshop exploring the art of natural dyeing and printmaking guided by local artist Pamela Fernandez! In this 90-minute session, students will learn how to:
- Naturally dye garments using yellow onion skins and pomegranate-turmeric dye baths
- Make potato stamps for printmaking
- Print on pre-dyed cotton bandanas
Participants should bring pre-washed clothing made of natural fibers (like cotton, linen, silk, or wool) to dip into our community dye pots. If you’d like to dye your own garment, please arrive within the first 30 minutes to allow enough time in the dye bath. Can’t make it right at the start? No worries, you can still join in and create your own printed bandana!
While the dyes set, you’ll explore the basics of fabric mordanting, dye safety, and lightfastness. Everyone will receive informational handouts with tips and instructions for natural dyeing at home (one for plant-based fibers and one for protein-based fibers).
Geared toward adults, but all ages are welcome to participate. Children should be accompanied by a grown-up.
