MOAB HIKE #1 (Part of Pipe Dream)

This hike is geared toward the 50+ crowd. While all ages are welcome, we are especially interested in forming a hiking circle here in Moab of 50+ folks who want to get in shape / stay in shape hiking (and perhaps backpacking at times)! Some of us are retired, some are not. But, what we share is a love of the outdoors and a desire to stay fit.
For this upcoming hike, we will be doing a small part of the Pipe Dream trail in Moab (about 3 miles) starting at 6:30am Friday, July 18, 2025. This is not an easy hike, but is not extremely challenging either. The portion we are hiking is considered “Moderately” difficult. It has hilly terrain with only one steep walk up of about 300 vertical feet. No scrambling is involved. The first half of the hike is on a very rarely used jeep trail (actually, I have never seen a jeep there in over 5 years). The second half of the trail is on a regular (single file) path along the east side of the rim.
The average pace (depending on ability) is 2.5 – 3 miles per hour. Overall time to hike this route ranges from an hour for fast hikers, to about an hour and 45 minutes for slow ones. The route will be somewhat rocky in places, but not technical. It's really a lovely hike with good views of Moab and of the La Sal mountains.
We will hike in light rain, but not a thunderstorm. If it looks like very bad weather, we will cancel the hike by 6:00 a.m.
We will meet in the parking lot of the Pipe Dream trail head in Moab close to the vault toilet. The road going to the parking lot is 15 MPH and taken seriously by the locals. Drive slowly please. The trailhead toilet is open, but no potable water is available, so bring your own.
REMINDER: Bring water, snacks, sun protection, sun glasses, and wear clothing appropriate for the weather.
Spouses, partners, and plus ones are welcome to join. Dogs on leash are allowed on this trail so long as they are well behaved.
