🌱 Join Us for 6 Free Garden Workshops with Alan at the DUC Garden! 🌱
We’re thrilled to offer a six-part garden workshop series at the DUC Garden (next to 33543 9th Avenue in Mission), led by the knowledgeable and engaging Alan, and presented by the Dunsmuir Neighbourhood Association in partnership with the Binary Freedom Foundation, with support from a grant from the City of Mission.
🗓 Upcoming Dates:
August 9, 16, 23, 30 — with more workshops coming in September and October
🕚 Time: All workshops start at 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
🎟 Cost: FREE and open to all ages! No registration required—just show up. (Our fence will not keep kids in, so parental supervision is required at all time)
👨🌾 About Alan:
Alan is a 12-year veteran of the vineyard world, having worked with grapes across both the Fraser and Okanagan valleys. He recently completed a diploma in Agriculture Technology from UFV to broaden his agricultural expertise. Beyond vineyards, Alan is a passionate home gardener with a love for seed saving and heritage plant propagation. He believes that every garden is a good garden—whether it’s an acre of perfection or a pot on a windowsill.
🌿 Workshop Topics Include:
• Invasive Plants & Native Alternatives – What to plant instead, how to identify invasives, and why they still show up in stores
• Companion Planting – Planting families together, crop rotation, legumes, and how to make small spaces work
• Integrated Pest Management – Natural pest solutions, understanding pests, using thresholds and bio-security
• Soil Health – Composting, pH vs. EC, drainage, organic matter, non-native earthworms
• Propagation Techniques – Plant hormones, rooting, dividing, layering, grafting, and potting mixes
• Agroecology Fundamentals – Creating ecosystems, forest gardening, ecological succession, and long-term thinking
🧺 Bring a notebook, your curiosity, and a bag—sometimes you’ll leave with more than just knowledge! (We have washrooms & water)
