Ride To Remember will reintorduce us to the Geography and the events of 2020. We will ride from Venture Bikes Midtown (2834 10th Ave So) to distinct locations that were central to the community repsonse - George Floyd Square, the Midtown Exchange building, Powderhorn Park, and the former site of the 3rd precinct police station and 3030 Nicollet where Wells Fargo burned.
In the early evening of May 25, 2020 George Floyd was murdered by police officer Derek Chauvin at the corner of Chicago Ave and East 38th Street in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In the days that followed, the world watched as people from all walks of life responded to the tragedy. Local, national, and international media outlets sent reporters and camera crews in an attempt to document, and in many instances, simplify and sensationalize what was happening. In a direct response to this imbalance, and to the dissonance she was feeling between what the neighborhood was experiencing and what was being reported, Carla Godwin, a resident at Midtown Exchange, decided to gather the stories that were shaping her city, from the mouths of those experiencing them - and VOICES was born. In a temporary recording studio at Midtown, Carla and a handful of collaborators recorded interviews with Lake Street and Midtown business owners from East Africa, members of the Midtown resident defense group, and organizers from Geroge Floyd Square, Black Lives Matter and the broader 9th ward. Prompted with simple questions, each interviewee was given the opportunity to reflect on how George Floyd’s M**der and the responses that followed impacted their lives. In all, 19 neighbors shared their stories.
Now, five years after the M**der of George Floyd, VOICES is being released publicly to encourage further contemplation, learning, understanding and engagement. Join the ride amd if you need a bike - we got you! Call 612 875 7803 wiht questions or concerns. We will host a community dinner and conversation at rides end. Slow Roll is conversationally paced and appropriate for humans over 12 years of age. Consider the content as you invite firends and family to this event.
