Immigrants carry more than hope as they cross oceans and traverse continents to come to the United States. They hold tightly to stories and recipes, remembrances of what they left behind. Kitchens of Hope brings together these memories from contributors who hail from more than thirty countries, offering a glimpse into their kitchens and insight into their lives. This book is a celebration of people and cuisines from around the world, infused with the aromas of epazote and cardamom, the tang of fish sauce, the heat of chili peppers, and the bite of mustard greens.
Join the authors and contributors to Kitchens of Hope as they talk about the process of creating the book and creating community through food. After the presentation, all will be available for individual conversations and book signing.
The stories and recipes were collected by former food editor of the Star Tribune Taste section, Lee Svitak Dean; her sister, Linda S. Svitak, a trial attorney and as a longtime volunteer for The Advocates for Human Rights; and Christin Jaye Eaton, a trial attorney at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, who has done a pro bono work on immigration cases. Photographs are by Tom Wallace, formerly of the Star Tribune.
The authors collected the stories and brought the contributos to the forefront in eac chapter, letting each person's voice shine through. Some of the contributors will be at the book launch and will be availble to speak individually to attendees and to sign their chapters in the book.
Those chapters are structured around the personal stories of the journeys made by each contributor, which include themes of community, resilience, opportunity, justice, hope, and celebration.
The Kitchens of Hope book launch is more than the presentation of a new cookbook. It's an opportunity for one-on-one conversations with people who love sharing ideas on food, community, and the commonalities that create this country. As with the book, it's a way to honor the work and commitment of those who have traveled far with hope in their hearts.
