Climbing Photography Workshop with Kenz Hack

Join us for an outdoor, hands-on workshop with Kenz Hack – photographer, climber, and creator of the Devil’s Lake Climbing Zine – as they share the tools and techniques behind compelling climbing photography. Whether you’re a weekend crag shooter or an aspiring photojournalist, this workshop is for anyone looking to elevate their photos or sharpen their roped technical skills.
We will break down the essential components of climbing photography:
The golden trio of manual exposure - shutter speed, aperture, and ISO - and how to adjust for changing light and movement
Lens choice, focal length, and camera settings for maximum image quality
What makes for compelling composition and how to tell a visual story through your images!
To keep things low-pressure and beginner friendly, we’ll use ropes set just a few feet off the ground, so students can practice systems without the stress of real exposure. Students will get hands-on, off-the-ground experience learning how to:
Ascend a rope 3 ft off the ground
Practice rappelling by lowering themselves 3 ft back to the ground
Learn the differences between ascending with jumars vs prussiks
How and when to use an aider
Ways to keep your camera safe when you choose to rappel down a wall
We’ll also take a deep dive into a variety of ascenders and other climbing gear photographers rely on to get the shot - all available at Lake State Mountaineering. Plus, all workshop attendees receive a special discount on LSM gear during the event!
What to bring:
Your camera, if you’d like to follow along with camera settings
A climbing harness, if you have one (if not, LSM can hook you up!)
Curiosity - no climbing or photography experience required!
